Understand HLM Player Types

Hockey Legacy Manager player types describe a player’s style. Forwards, defensemen, and goalies use different type lists. Compare a player’s type with their position and ratings when choosing your forward lines and defensive pairs.

Player type Abbreviation What the label emphasizes
Sniper SNP Shooting and scoring
Playmaker PLM Passing and creating offense
Two way forward TWF Defense-focused all-around play
Power forward PWF Physical play with offense
Enforcer ENF Hitting and physical play
Player type Abbreviation What the label emphasizes
Offensive defenseman OFD Passing and creating offense from defense
Defensive defenseman DFD Defensive awareness and shot blocking
Two way defenseman TWD Offense and defense

Goalies use the Hybrid type, shown as HYB.

Overall rating is not calculated the same way for every player type. HLM gives more importance to the attributes that match the type. Passing matters more to a Playmaker overall, while shooting matters more to a Sniper overall. A Two way forward overall places more emphasis on defense.

This means overall ratings are most useful when you also check the player type and individual ratings. Two players with the same overall can reach that number through different strengths.

Use player types when building lines and pairs

Section titled “Use player types when building lines and pairs”

Start with position and ratings, then use player type to compare players who could fill the same spot. After changing a forward line or defensive pair, check its offensive chemistry. If a player cannot be placed in the lineup, use the lineup guide to fix the error first.

Potential and motivation describe development, not playing style. See the potential and motivation guide for those labels.
